General Valuer

Job description:

We are seeking an experienced General Valuer to join our Fine Art and Antiques auction team. You will carry out professional valuations for probate, insurance, and market purposes, support cataloguing and research, provide excellent client service, and help consign items and generate new business for auctions.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Valuations & Cataloguing

  • Conduct professional valuations for probate, insurance, and market (open market) purposes across a broad range of categories including fine art, antiques, decorative arts, jewellery, silver, furniture, and collectables.
  • Prepare detailed, accurate valuation reports to company and legal standards.
  • Support specialist departments with cataloguing, research, condition reporting, and attribution of items for auction.

Client & Business Engagement

  • Provide high-quality client service during on-site visits, home appointments, and at valuation days.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with private clients, solicitors, executors, estate agents, and professional partners.
  • Offer informed advice on sale options, estimates, reserves, and auction processes.

Auction Operations

  • Collaborate with all departments, including front-of-house, logistics, photography, and specialist teams to ensure smooth cataloguing and sale production.
  • Assist with pre-sale preparation, saleroom display, and auction-day operations as required.
  • Contribute to departmental development, cross-selling opportunities, and the generation of new business.

 

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Previous experience working within the auction industry is essential.
  • Broad knowledge of fine art and antiques, with confidence assessing items across multiple categories.
  • Experience producing formal valuations for probate and insurance purposes.
  • Strong research and cataloguing skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and client-facing skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple internal teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for client visits.

 

Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience of business development within the auction or art market sectors.
  • An interest in certain specialist departments including collectables, Works of Art, Militaria and Medals.
  • Comfort with digital tools, online bidding platforms, and valuation software.
  • Previous auctioneering experience.
