A Journey Through Glass History – The Paul Kettle Collection of Glass

From Georgian Elegance to Murano Mastery

Glass tells the story of taste, technology and luxury like few other materials. From the refined dining tables of Georgian England to the bold artistic statements of 20th-century Murano, the last three hundred years of glassmaking chart a remarkable journey of craftsmanship and design. This evolution is perfectly captured in The Paul Kettle Collection of Glass, offered at Fieldings Auctioneers Ltd on Thursday 29th January 2026.

The story begins in the early 18th century with Georgian drinking glasses, prized today for their elegant simplicity and hand-crafted quality. Heavy baluster and later balustroid stems, bucket bowls and air-twist designs reflect a period when glass was both functional and a symbol of refinement. These early English glasses remain highly collectible, valued for their purity of form and historical importance.

During the same period, Irish glassmaking flourished, particularly in Cork and Belfast. Irish glass is celebrated for its clarity, weight and confident cutting. Tablewares and decorative pieces from these centres rivalled English production and developed a distinctive identity. Antique Irish glass from the 18th and early 19th centuries is now increasingly sought after by collectors looking for quality, rarity and strong provenance.

The Victorian era ushered in technical innovation and artistic ambition, nowhere more so than in Stourbridge, the heart of Britain’s glass industry. Renowned makers such as Thomas Webb and Stevens & Williams elevated glassmaking to an art form. Richly coloured wares, cameo glass and finely engraved pieces defined Victorian luxury and showcased extraordinary skill. Today, Stourbridge glass remains a cornerstone of serious glass collections.

By the 20th century, attention turned to continental design, particularly Italian glass from Murano. Murano glassmakers embraced bold colour, sculptural form and experimental techniques, producing pieces that bridged tradition and modern art. From mid-century designs to later studio works, Murano glass represents innovation, flair and international appeal.

Spanning Georgian Britain, Irish craftsmanship, Victorian excellence and modern Italian design, The Paul Kettle Collection offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire glass across three centuries. Whether you are drawn to antique drinking glasses, Irish cut glass, Stourbridge masterpieces or Murano art glass, this sale promises exceptional quality and variety.
