Fieldings Auctioneers is delighted to announce a forthcoming highlight of the spring calendar:
The Studio Sale – The Ronald and Betty Pennell Collection
Taking place on 1st May, this exceptional auction offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire works from the lifetime collection of two highly regarded and influential British artists whose careers have left a lasting imprint on the modern art market.
Ronald Pennell is internationally recognised as one of the UK’s leading glass engravers and sculptors. Renowned for his intricate, narrative-driven engravings on glass and his work in bronze, Pennell’s practice bridges traditional craftsmanship with imaginative storytelling. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum, underlining his importance within both the applied arts and contemporary collecting spheres.
Alongside him, Betty Pennell has built a distinguished reputation as a painter and printmaker. Trained under notable figures including John Nash and Edward Bawden, her work continues the British Romantic landscape tradition, often infused with poetic, symbolic imagery drawn from the English and Welsh borderlands. Her distinctive visual language, combining landscape, narrative and subtle surrealism, has made her work highly sought after among collectors of modern British art.
Working both independently and collaboratively, Ronald and Betty Pennell established studios in Herefordshire, where they developed a rich creative dialogue over decades. Their shared environment fostered a unique collection reflecting not only their own artistic journeys but also their deep connections within the European and British art worlds.
This studio sale brings together a carefully curated selection of works amassed over more than 50 years, including paintings, sculpture and works on paper. The collection reflects the Pennells’ discerning eye and their relationships with fellow artists, offering pieces that span 20th-century European art with accessible estimates and broad appeal.
For collectors, this auction represents more than a sale, it is an insight into the creative lives of two celebrated artists and an opportunity to acquire works with strong provenance and artistic significance. Fieldings Auctioneers invites both seasoned collectors and new buyers to explore this remarkable collection ahead of the sale on 1st May.
