Charles II to Elizabeth II: Maundy Money at Fieldings’ coin Auction

Few British coins combine history, royalty and collectability quite like Maundy Money. With a tradition spanning more than 700 years, these distinctive silver coins remain one of the most fascinating areas of British numismatics. Collectors now have a rare opportunity to acquire exceptional examples at Fieldings Auctioneers' Specialist Coin Auction on Thursday 30th July starting at 10am, featuring 20 lots of Maundy Money dating from the reign of Charles II through to Queen Elizabeth II.

The Royal Maundy tradition was formally introduced during the reign of King John in the early 13th century, although it was Edward I who established many of the customs that continue today. Originally, English monarchs distributed food, clothing and money to the poor while taking part in the symbolic washing of recipients' feet on Maundy Thursday, commemorating Christ's act of humility at the Last Supper. Over time, the ceremony evolved into the presentation of specially struck silver Maundy coins, a tradition that continues under King Charles III.

Today, Maundy Money is presented annually to men and women whose number corresponds with the monarch's age, recognising their outstanding Christian service and contributions to their local communities. Although the coins remain legal tender, they are rarely spent and are instead treasured as keepsakes or added to collections.

For collectors, Maundy Money offers an unrivalled journey through British history. Complete sets consist of silver one, two, three and four pence pieces, with designs remaining remarkably unchanged for centuries. Earlier issues, particularly those of Charles II, are especially desirable due to their rarity and historical significance following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Other highly sought-after coins include scarce dates from William III, Queen Anne, George III, and beautifully preserved Victorian and early 20th-century sets. Condition, rarity and provenance all play a significant role in determining value, with the finest early examples often commanding substantial prices at auction.

Fieldings Auctioneers' forthcoming Specialist Bespoke Coin Auction presents an exceptional opportunity for collectors of every level. The carefully curated sale features 20 Maundy Money lots, spanning more than 300 years of British history, from Charles II through to Elizabeth II, offering something for both seasoned numismatists and those beginning their collections.
