Fieldings to sell a single owner collection of items from the late Professor Richard Snell

Richard Snell

1950 – 2019

Professor Richard Snell was a prominent British furniture for over 45 years.  He was well respected and known for his progressive design within the furniture industry.  He had a long and sustained commitment to education. Based in Birmingham he was Emeritus Professor of Design (Birmingham City University) and headed the 3D department from 2007 till he retired in 2015. He worked closely with industry and at the invitation of Sir Simon Rattle he (together with his colleague David Rowe) designed the Opus musicians chair for the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, which has now been embraced by many other orchestras around the world. He was also an avid collector and was Chair of the George Jackson Travel Award Trust. To continue his passion a proportion of funds raised from this auction will be ring fenced to support the development of young up-and-coming designers.

Richard was a long standing client of Fieldings and we were aware of his passion and influence within the industry.   It is both a pleasure and a privilege to be asked to assist with the sale of some of his personal collection of chairs and design items and we hope that the purchasers of these lots go on to enjoy then and gain the pleasure from their use as Richard did.

All items will be included in our Decades of Design Auction, Saturday 7th March.

Designers include Robin Day, Charles and Ray Eames, Joe Columbo, Thonet, Ernest Race, Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, Tim Bates - Pieff Furniture, Maurice Burke - Arkana, Frank Wardle and many more.

All items will be clearly marked as part of the collection.
