Lot 811: Sold for £850 hammer

Estimate £300-£500

A 19th Century or earlier Greek Mount Athos cross in carved Cypress wood and gilt with finely worked centre and panel detail of the crucifixion to both sides, with chamfered handle and knot, height 18.5cm x 6.5cm.

These crosses were made by miniature carvers from the 17th century onwards in the various monasteries located around Mount Athos depicting scenes from the Old and New testaments.

Reference - A similar cross lacking handle sold at Sotheby's sale (L19359) lot 154, 11th December 2019 Berkeley collection from Spetchley Park Worcestershire.

Condition report
There are no splits of losses to the panel or edges of the cross. There are however three slots that may suggest there would have been three star mounts. There is evidence that the handle has been glued into the sloy
