Lot 798: Sold for £1,000 hammer

Estimate £400-£600

A Charles II silkwork easel mirror, late 17th Century and later with central rectangular bevelled plate, the outer frame embroidered with silk and silver threads depicting a Stuart lady and gentleman to the sides between flower heads with a deer, unicorn, leopard and lion within roundels to each corner, the arch with a central roundel depicting a lady holding a mirror to her face with a palace in the background and a coloured silk landscape, framed with further flowers and a snail and caterpillar, later silk back and replacement easel, 51cm x 46cm, S/D.

Condition report
This is somewhat tired. There are loose threads, pulls and losses in places. The silk in places has torn / split and has running stitch repairs to hold in place. This is most noticable to the edge framing the mirror and the bar across the bottom. There is visible padding where it has pulled. I suspect the bottom bar (which protrudes slightly) is a later addition as the silkwork appears seperate to the upper section and the wooden block backing is visible. Staining to the edges. Some patches of strong colour, some patches of complete colour loss. The back has staining and a limed oak later easel (as catalogued)
