Lot 596 : Sold for £820 hammer

Estimate £400-£600

An album of poems, plays, amateur dramatics and newspaper cuttings collated by Miss Clare Verney of Lighthorne, Warwickshire dating from 1903 to circa 1916 containing original pencil cartoon sketches by Bruce Bairnsfather to include a First World War illustration of a seated soldier near a tunnel titled I Wish I Was In Wigan, together with various other original sketches by the artist including a watercolour of Robin Hood dated July 23 1910. Bruce Bairnsfather was a family friend he used to cycle to Ligththorne to participate in various plays with Clare Verney performed at the Beechwood Theatre and pantomimes at Compton Verney. The sketches try to depict the humorous side of The First World War often poking fun at the characters Old Bill, Bert and Alf soldiers of reality, scruffy and comfortable in such formidable circumstances.
