Two late 19th Century Minton Hollis 8inch dust pressed tiles, the first designed by John Moyr Smith and decorated with a scene of Old Mortality - Morton and Burley (from a Walter Scott novel), the second hand painted in blue and white with a mythical scene 'The Birth of Nicotia', the reverse painted Thomas designed and painted 1876 (2) NB. It is believed that it was the Victorians who coined the phrase Nicotinian as a term for a gentleman smoker with Nicotia as their goddess . According to the poet James Russell Lowell, Nicotia is the daughter of Bacchus and her mother the daughter of Morpheus.
