Lot 557: Estimate £200-£300

An 1940s 'B.A.L. built baggage' travelling wardrobe or steamer trunk, with applied letters D.B. for Doris Barry, the tan coloured leather bound case with brass studs and fittings, opening to reveal a hanging section with retractable metal fittings and five wooden hangers, the opposite door fitted with two graduated slide drawers each with metal handles below a fall front compartment, external brass fittings marked Eagle Lock Co. USA, Terryville Conn., various travel labels, remaining height 101cm x depth 35cm x width 55cm.

Provenance: Dame Alicia Markova's sister Doris Barry. When Alicia became a prima ballerina, Doris acted as her manager for many years and travelled with her across the world. She returned to work with Noel Coward at the Festival Ballet in 1959 where she stayed for five years before going on to work with Hughie Green on 'Opportunity Knocks' as a talent spotter. The film 'Mrs Henderson Presents', starring Judi Dench is loosely based on Doris's experiences in theatre.

Condition report
