Lot 859: Sold for £500 hammer

Estimate £700-£1,000

A large 1738 bronze mortar, probably by the Ashton Foundry, Wigan, Lancashire, inscribed about the waist 'William Oddie, 1738', the words separated by small hearts, and with a founder's mark of a bell above the initials 'IV'-, diameter 34cm x height 28.5cm.

Footnote:
Sold by Christie's, South Kensington, 7th November 2006, lot 216.
William Oddie was probably the owner of this mortar, and not the maker. A William Oddie, apothecary, died in Clitheroe, Lancashire in 1764.
Earlier mortars by Ralph Ashton (fl. 1703-28) incorporate similar 'wire' decoration, numerals and hearts.
