Lot 1334: Estimate £600-£1,000

An Anglo-Saxon scattered hoard of weaponry and tools circa AD600-AD900, comprising an iron spear head dating from the 7th to 9th Century of kite shape with short concave sides in a lozenge shaped section, length 9.5cm (SWYOR-EB7AA1), a weaving batten or sword beater with long tapering iron blade with a slight bend, length 55cm (SWORY-EB10D), four whittle tang knives (SWYOR-148980, SWYOR-13FF91, SWYOR-146DF7 and SWOR-14A685), a drawknife, length 143mm (SWYOR-14ED88), four whittle tang knifes, two further knife blades (SWYOR-145073 & SWYOR-142DD2), also a bridle bit, length 83.78mm (SWYOR-2B4617), an awl, length 95.6mm (SWYOR-2B5DA5), a sword guard, length 98mm (SWYOR-1590A4), also various associated iron fittings, ringlets, nails and possibly shield fragments. NB - The hoard was discovered in November 2011 while metal detecting on a farm in a village in the North Yorkshire. After discovery it was reported, recorded and returned to the finder. Each major element mentioned above has its own unique ID reference number and a full report for each major piece will be made available to the purchaser. The weaving baton is mentioned on page 237 of Finds Identified by Kevin Leahy and Michael Lewis.

Condition report
For such an early collection it appears in a fair state of preservation, however further conservation work will be needed to add stability as there is some fragmentation starting to appear and silica gel has beeen packed throughout the hoard.
