Lot 899: Estimate £800-£1,200

A late 19th to early 20th Century taxidermy head study of gharial or gavial crocodile (Gavialis gangeticus), with inset glass eyes, mounted to a shield shaped bracket shelf, length of head 84cm, dimensions of the bracket height 103cm and width 38cm, S/D. Provenance - Taken by the present owner's grandfather when he served in the army in India, circa 1900.

Condition report
There is a small wear hole to the rear of the protrusion on the top of the snout. There appear to be 14 teeth missing. There is a 4cm section of skin missing from the left hand side of the neck where it joins the bracket shelf. There is a hole to the skin to either side of the jaw line. There is an old flat head screw to the front of the bottom jaw that affixes the head to the bracket.
