Lot 34: Sold for £45 hammer

Estimate £50-£80

A 1930s Charlotte Rhead for Crown Ducal jug decorated with a bunch of grapes and foliage to the neck on a snow glaze ground, printed mark, no pattern number, height 15.5cm. NB - The late Jack Chapman wrote to Bernard Bumpus (author of many books on Charlotte Rhead) in 1999 to ask his opinion on this jug. His reply states "The design on your new jug is not listed in the Richardson pattern books. I know of one other example, on a different shaped jug. This too has no pattern number. These were probably samples of which a small number were made either for costings purposes of for the Richardson salesmen to try out 'on the road'. As both jugs has a snow glaze they are likely to sate from around 1937 but the pattern evidently did not go into commercial production".
