Lot 175: Estimate £800-£1,200

An 18th Century drinking glass circa 1765, with political interest, the ogee bowl engraved WILKES No 45 with foliate scrolls above a double series opaque twist stem with two five ply spiral tapes outside a central lace twist, raised to a conical foot. NB - John Wilkes was born in London in 1727 and became member of Parliament for Aylesbury in 1757. He attained considerable notoriety by the publication of his paper titled 'The North Briton', issue No 45 in which he attacked the content of the King's speech to Parliament. A warrant was issued to 'seize the authors' and Wilkes, with others, was apprehended. The Lord Chief Justice later ruled that he was protected by parliamentary privilege and he was restored to his seat.
