Lot 500a: Estimate £800-£1,200

A very large opaline Vitrified enamel glass vase by W. H. B. & J. Richardson circa 1845-1855, the footed swollen skittle form with everted rim, the body profusely decorated with floral studies of nasturtium, parrot tulips, convolvulus and other wild flowers between gilded borders, the base stamped RICHARDSONS VITRIFIED, height 50.5cm.  NB - For similar examples ref British Glass 1800-1914 - Charles R. Hajdamach, plate 81, which shows the example featured at the Great Exhibition and now in the Stourbridge Glass Museum collection and also item number 9248 - V&A Museum permanent collection with additional catalogue notes reading - This vase follows tastes established in Europe, particularly in France, for enamelled opal glass. The decoration would have been approved by design-reformers such as Henry Cole - the naturalistically rendered passion-flowers, convolvulus, tulips and iris being deemed 'appropriate' for a flower vase.

Condition report
The vase is free from damage or restoration but does show wear to the gilded rim and foot.
