Lot 699 : Sold for £90 hammer

Estimate £60-£80

Mabel V Hodgkiss - William Bennett - A 1930s Art Deco mantel garniture, the vase formed as a five specimen fan shape intersected into a semi circle, the garniture formed as three graduated rectangular bars supported by a larger rectangle, the whole hand-painted in orange, yellow, green and black, printed marks S/D. It is believed that Mabel V Hodgkiss was a student of the Burslem School of Art and was employed at William Bennett to design and decorate in the style of the factories 'rivals'. Taking inspiration from Myott and Clarice Cliff, little is known of Mabel V Hodgkiss. The William Bennett, Hanley factory closed in 1937.
