A late 17th to early 18th Century Delft wet drug jar, the contents of PAEON:COMP on a wide label below a wreath and two peacocks above a cherubim with tassels in its mouth, the head of a saint under the spout, circa 1700, height 19cm This jar contained paeonia compostum (pounded peony) The peony can provide remedies from its roots, leaves, flowers and seeds, the first being a sure-fire cure for sleep problems including 'the disease we commonly call the night-mare'.
