A mid 18th Century Delft wet drug jar, inscribed S:DE:SPIN:CERV on a bold cartouche hung with swags and tassels, height 19cm The contents of this jar were syrup of spina cervina (buckthorn). Culpeper differentiates between Buck's-horn Plantain and Buck's Horn, the one a small plant, the other 'not much unlike to those of Buck's-horn Plantain, but much smaller, and not so hairy.' When boiled in wine and drank it 'stays the distillation of hot and sharp rheums falling into the eyes from the head
