A late 1940s ballet tutu, the bodice of corset form in cream satin embellished with silver braid, sequins and tulle leading to an embroidered panel to the waist in gold and silver threads with pink and blue detailing, the plate skirt formed from several layers of tulle with matching silver braid motif and gold sequins, bears in hand written ink Markova to the waist band which has a line of read stitching through, approximate size 4 Provenance - the vendor was given this tutu in 1959 whilst working in the wardrobe department at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. It is believed the tutu was worn by Markova in June 1948 when she danced as Odette from Swan Lake with the Sadler's Well Ballet at Covent Garden (as illustrated in Alicia Markova by Gordon Anthony, page 99)
