An early 18th Century Lambeth Delft dry drug jar, painted with a label inscribed C: AURAN: below a scallop shell on a cartouche amongst swags, tassels and flowers with two angels perched atop either side, height 19cm, S/D A similar jar is in the Bristol Collection, Frank Britton, 1982, no. 5.4 C.Aurant is an abbreviation for conserva auriantium, a conserve made with Seville oranges, i.e marmalade. It was, apparently, a tonic.
