ENGLISH SCHOOL (EARLY 19TH CENTURY) - 'Portrait of William Macready in the character of Hamlet, Theatre Royal, Newcastle upon Tyne', pen and ink sketch, unframed, 31cm x 20cm William Charles Macready (1793-1873) was the leading Shakespearian actor of his day. He performed in the major London theatres and successfully toured in the USA. In 1838 he gave a memorable performance of Henry V, for which Clarkson Stanfield prepared sketches.
