SIR JOHN MILLER ADYE (1819-1900) - 'Gibraltar', watercolour, signed and dated 1886, inscribed 'General and Governor', framed, 26cm x 36cm Born into a military family, John Adye served throughout the Crimean War with distinction and later the Indian Rebellion in 1857. He served in India until 1866 before returning to England. He was awarded a knighthood in 1873. Adye was appointed Governor of Gibraltar in 1883, a position he held for three years.
