A 19th Century French Polynesia Austral Ra'vavai islands tribal ceremonial carved 'Tamau' wood paddle or hoe (Tahitian for paddle), the tear drop shaped blade divided into panels of roundels and hatched design, the reverse with bands of lunette decoration, carved long shaft terminating in a pommel carved with Tiki, length 152.2cm, damages Notes : These paddles were not intended for functional use but are thought to have been used as emblems of status or in ceremonial dances. The intricate incised carving was done using sharks teeth, shells and stones.
