Lot 119 : Estimate £120-£180

A 19th Century Staffordshire equestrian figure modelled as Louisa Fairbrother (Mrs Fitz-George), the wife of the second Duke of Cambridge, she sat on a horse and titled Duchess to the oval base, unmarked, height 35cm. Louisa Fairbrother's marriage to George, the second Duke of Cambridge, was in contravention of the Royal Marriages Act 1772. Their marriage was not recognised under the law and this meant that she was never given a title. It is believed that owing to her popularity, the potters gave her the courtesy title of Duchess. In this model she is the left side figure.
