A 19th Century Minton Parian chess set in white and lapis lazuli blue, modelled by John Bell (1812-1895) the pieces depict gladiators and emperors highlighted with gilt decoration, the King measuring 11cm and the Pawn 6cm NB. This chess set design was originally exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was subsequently revived several times during the 1870s and again in the 1950s. Although unmarked, this set has the date cipher for 1874.
