John Henry Chamberlain (1831-1883) - A pair of carved oak and marquetry inlaid fielded panel cabinet doors in the Aesthetic taste, the central panels inlaid with floral and foliate designs beneath conforming carved panels, finished with carved corner spandrels and decorative brass strapwork hinges, height of each door panel 72cm and width including the hinge bar 49cm.
Provenance: It is believed that these door panels formed part of the original furnishings of The Grove, in Harborne, Birmingham, redecorated by Chamberlain in 1877. The furniture at The Grove was made by a carver called Barfield. The Grove was demolished in the early 1960s and the ante-room from The Grove was re-erected in The Victoria and Albert Museum.
These doors were acquired by the present owner from a salvage merchant who was involved in the demolition in the early 1960s.
