Lot 102 : Sold for £40 hammer

Estimate £40-£60

A Minton white porcelain milk jug from the Society of Arts of 1846, designed by Henry Cole (under the alias of Felix Summerly), height 12cm N.B: Disappointed by the standard of industrial design in Britain, Prince Albert encouraged the Society of Arts to run a competition for new designs based on historical precedents combined with modern manufacturing techniques and utility. Helped by his friend Herbert Minton, Sir Henry Cole spent three days at the Minton factory personally supervising his teaset design entry. Prince Albert was particularly taken by the novelty shape of the jug which had three lips, which meant it could be poured at any angle by just a slight movement of the user's wrist, instead of lifting the arm.
