Ronnie Kray - (1933 - 1995) - An early oil on board of a naive landscape with cottage and tree by a river, large signature to the lower right, to the reverse - PELICI CAFE, 23cm x 30.5cm ILLUSTRATED Provenance - This work was painted by Ronnie Kray during his time in Broadmoor. The work was given to Nevio Pellici by Kray as a gift, then by decent to the vendor, his son. Pellicci's, in Bethnal Green, is one of London's last surviving Fifties Italian coffee bars. It was also a regular haunt for the Kray twins who used to meet there for coffee with other members of the 'Firm'. In an interview before his death Nevio remembered the Kray's, who used to live nearby, as 'gentlemen', adding: 'They were children when I started serving them. They were very respectful, charming. If my mother was behind the counter and someone swore, they would ask them to show some respect.' This painting comes from an extensive family archive of personal letters and cards presented by the Kray twins and their extended family to the Pellicis.
