Craigie Aitchison Collection - Craigie Aitchison C.B.E., R.A. (British, 1926-2009) Still Life with Jug and Check Jumper, circa 1952, oil on canvas board, framed, 30.5 cm by 25.5 cm, Provenance - This work was gifted by Craigie to his sister in law Sally Aitchison. Thence by descent. Ref - In 1952 Craigie begins to take private tuition from the artists Gerlad Frankl. In the same year he applies to the Slade School of Art, University College, London to study as a part time fee paying student. He begins his attendance in October of that year. It is around the time this work was painted that Craigie starts to form friendships with fellow artists Euan Uglow and Myles Murphy. The work had been previously titled 'Still-life with Jug and Check Cloth' however the check area in the work is actually a hand knitted jumper made for Craigie by his mother and shown casually draped on the table. The jumper was kept by Craigie and is to be included in this lot.
