An early 19th Century miniature of John Gatecliff (1771-1831), painted in his forty fourth year wearing a blue coat and white ruff, the reverse with plume of hair and monogram within a simulated seed pearl frame on a blue ground, glazed and gold frame, mounted on a plush purple frame, 7cm x 5.5cm. ILLUSTRATED. Together with an album of typed accounts of his life with remarks and reflections during his captivity in France. John Gatecliffe rose to the position of Commodore of the Humber Pilots through the exertions of the principal people of Hull. He held this position for some time and through ill health brought on by his incarceration he died September 21st, 1831, aged sixty years.
