Lot 486 : Sold for £5,200 hammer

Estimate £1,000-£1,500

An early to mid 19th Century 15ct rose gold mounted mother of pearl and micromosaic necklace composed of a series of twelve graduated micromosaic panels each depicting a basket of flowers against a black ground, with millefiori border and inset into a mother of pearl plaque, each plaque united by a double festoon of fine trace link chains, largest panel 3cm x 2.4cm. Notes: This floral composition is after a large antique Roman floor mosaic discovered circa 1790 at the Quintili and now in the Sala della Croce Greca of the Vatican's Pio Clementine Museum. The Vatican mosaic and variations on it were frequently reproduced in micromosaics. Literature: The Gilbert Collection, Micromosaics, Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, pub. Philip Wilson p. 226 for similar example.
