A Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) bronze elephant jardinière decorated with a continuous band of elephants playing in the water, cast in high relief and on four elephant supports, three character signature to underside translated as 'cast by Seiya', the maker's marks for Genryusai Seiya, height 22cm, x width 32cm Notes: Genryusai Seiya was a master craftsman in charge of a workshop which specialized in high quality export wares. His portfolio typically included bronze models of tigers, elephants and other animals, probably influenced by the opening of Tokyo Zoological Gardens in 1882.
